Shanghai Disneyland Travel Guide!

Step 1: Download the “Disney Resort” app to check ticket prices, maps, attractions, and shows. Check the WeChat Mini Program “Magic Wait Times” for recent Disney crowds. Around 30,000 visitors? Skip Express Passes. Between 30,000-50,000? Buy a 3-attraction Express Pass bundle or single passes for longer waits. Over 60,000? Opt for a multi-attraction Express Pass bundle. At 80,000, even popular Express Pass attractions will have 1-hour waits. Also check the weather forecast. Generally, holidays and weekends are crowded, while Wednesdays tend to be quieter. Poor weather also draws fewer visitors. Clear skies aren’t always ideal—opt for summer days with brief showers for cooler temperatures. Finalize your visit date based on these factors.

Step 2: Set your budget—budget travel, moderate spending, or splurge—and purchase tickets. Budget Travel: Purchase basic admission tickets. Once inside, follow the wait times shown on the app and choose attractions based on your preferences. However, this is highly discouraged. The experience is poor—popular attractions inevitably have long lines. Even on a budget, ticket prices aren’t cheap, and you’ll waste valuable time. Since you’re at Disney, don’t skimp too much! Spend a bit (highly recommended): Be smart with your money—save where you can, splurge where it matters. There’s absolutely no need to blow your budget on hotels. Instead, buy a ticket package that includes FastPass+ (we recommend one with 6-8 FastPass+ options)—it’s a steal. For lodging, opt for hotels in Chuansha Town or nearby areas priced around 300-400 RMB. I stayed once at McGill Boutique Hotel in Chuansha (recommended for great service and clean rooms), once at Wanxin Hotel in Chuansha (near the subway station, smart hotel – recommended), and once at Venus International Hotel (on Shenjiang South Road – not recommended due to outdated rooms and poor soundproofing). All offer shuttle buses to Disney. Premium Experience: If you’re financially free, splurge on the Premium Experience Tour (minimum 3 people, over ¥5000 per person). This includes a 7-hour guided tour with staff, skip-the-line access to all attractions with unlimited rides, reserved viewing spots for parades and shows, and 20% off merchandise purchases.

Step 3: Park Experience Attire: Wear comfortable clothing, preferably pants. Avoid open-toed shoes or flip-flops (required for rope challenge attractions). Carry a small backpack only—keep essentials minimal (ID, phone). Purchase a headband beforehand (around ¥15) for photo ops. Rain gear is essential. Pack light snacks in your bag. Bring a reusable cup—water stations are everywhere in Disney, or buy bottled water to refill it for convenience. Meals: Eat breakfast at your hotel—make it hearty and satisfying. For lunch, find a themed restaurant you like inside the park for a proper meal—especially if you have kids. It’s pricier, but the Mickey-shaped eggs and carrots, Winnie the Pooh pizza, and Lina Belle drink cups offer great sentimental value. Dinner can be eaten outside the park.
Activities:

  1. Open the app to find nearby attractions with short wait times. Also note show schedules—Disney performances are highly recommended, like Frozen and Pirates of the Caribbean. If visiting in summer, don’t miss the Summer Spectacular in front of the castle.
  2. For parades, choose viewing spots with good visibility. Since the route curves, pick the side that juts out, not the recessed side.
  3. Guests over 1.2 meters tall can ride all attractions.
  4. If certain rides aren’t suitable for health reasons, visit the Guest Services Center to request alternatives. For example, avoid TRON Lightcycle Power Run if you have heart conditions, but most other attractions are fine.
  5. Visit the Toy Story area in the evening—you might catch a stunning sunset.
