The Yuyuan District is situated within the core demonstration zone of Shanghai’s Central Activity Area. It stands as the most distinctive representation of the Old City’s cultural character in Shanghai’s urban center, a vital hub for distinctive tourism and commerce, and a key connecting point along Shanghai’s century-old urban cultural axis.

The Yuyuan District encompasses Yuyuan Shopping Mall, a hub for cultural tourism and clusters of time-honored Chinese brands; Yuyuan Garden, the only surviving Ming Dynasty garden in the Old City renowned as “the most exquisite landscape south of the Yangtze”; and the City God Temple, the Old City’s cultural and commercial center dating back to 1292. Together, they form an interdependent and inclusive neighborhood layout.
The Yuyuan Shopping Mall is divided into three thematic zones: “Yuyuan Heritage,” “Yuyuan Stroll,” and “Sky Yuyuan,” corresponding respectively to culturally themed indoor spaces, vibrant commercial streets, and dynamic outdoor experiential settings. The mall collaborates with time-honored brands, intangible cultural heritage artisans, and diverse experiential projects. Centered on “Shanghai’s Old Flavors, New ICH Experiences” and set against a backdrop of traditional Chinese-style spaces, it narrates the Chinese New Year spirit and Shanghai stories from a local perspective.

Shanghai’s Yuyuan Garden and City God Temple stand as core landmarks of the historic city center. Though adjacent, each possesses unique character, together forming a city emblem that blends garden artistry with the vibrant energy of everyday life. Within Yuyuan Garden, intricate eaves and bracket systems conceal worlds within worlds, while its cultural heritage collections embody profound humanistic depth. It stands as both a frozen memory of the city’s history and an ever-evolving cultural symbol.

Constructed during the Jiajing and Wanli reigns of the Ming Dynasty, Yuyuan Garden boasts over 450 years of history. Spanning more than 30 acres, it was originally the private garden of Pan Yunduan, a Ming official. Owner Pan Yunduan served as Governor of Sichuan, while his father Pan En held high offices including Censor-in-Chief of the Left and Minister of Justice. When Pan En retired to his hometown in old age, Pan Yunduan dedicated over two decades to meticulously crafting Yuyuan Garden for his father’s peaceful retirement. By the mid-to-late Ming Dynasty, it was widely acclaimed as the “crown jewel of gardens in the southeast.” Yu Garden exemplifies the quintessential landscape of Jiangnan gardens, embodying the Ming and Qing dynasties’ southern garden aesthetic characterized by “serene beauty and exquisite delicacy.” The garden preserves a significant number of ancient and renowned trees, along with cultural treasures such as Ming and Qing dynasty furniture, calligraphy and paintings by famous artists, clay sculptures and brick carvings, and plaques and couplets. It encapsulates the essence of China’s rich traditional cultural and artistic heritage.
